Description: St Michael's Castle is a former royal residence in the historic centre of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was built as a residence for Emperor Paul I of Russia by architects Vincenzo Brenna and Vasily Bazhenov in 1797–1801. It was named for St Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of the royal family. The castle has a unique design that resembles a medieval fortress, with a moat and four different facades. The castle is also known as the Engineers' Castle because it was later used as a military engineering school. The castle is famous for being the scene of Emperor Paul I's murder by a group of conspirators in 1801, only 40 days after he moved in. Today, the castle is part of the Russian Museum and houses a collection of portraits, sculptures, and other artworks.
